Core Principle of the DLSS Module
The Demon Luminous Sea System (DLSS) employs an innovative technical architecture that ensures striking visual quality while keeping system overhead exceptionally low. At its core, DLSS performs water wave height-field simulation on a compact custom render texture: using a discrete Laplacian operator, wave heights are iteratively updated so that ripples caused by disturbances propagate outward in a physically realistic manner. This height-field simulation is executed through texture processing, with the GPU applying convolution updates to the height texture every frame, resulting in minimal computational cost. Meanwhile, the system records energy values for each pixel of the height field. When players or objects disturb the water surface, local energy rises, which directly amplifies the luminous intensity of the waves, thereby producing a vivid and dynamic fluorescence effect. During the shading stage, the shader samples the scene in screen space based on the current height-field normals, simulating realistic refraction and reflection effects without the need for additional cameras. The entire framework is built purely on shaders and texture computations, avoiding complex multi-pass rendering or heavy post-processing. This makes the solution highly adaptable and platform-compatible. It runs smoothly on both PC and Quest devices with extremely low CPU/GPU resource usage, yet successfully integrates interactive ripples with dynamic light effects—providing VRChat and similar applications with an efficient and practical solution for water rendering.

Water Surface Components & Prefabs: The system provides complete water surface prefabs, including the water plane and UI panels for switching effects. The water plane integrates multi-layer shader materials (L1 base water layer, L2 glow layer, L3 special effects layer) and comes with physical triggers to detect player and object interactions. A mode-switcher prefab is also included, enabling smooth transitions between different water effect modes. Core Script System: The built-in UdonSharp script DLSS_UdonSetup handles wave simulation and interaction control. It binds custom render textures (for ripple height-field simulation) to each water surface material layer, and offers adjustable parameters to fine-tune wave behaviors such as speed, damping, and pulse intensity. Additional scripts manage transitions between Default, Enhanced, and Galaxy visual modes, ensuring natural fade-in/out switching. Editor scripts are provided to help creators design color gradients and generate textures. Interactive Ripple Simulation: The system features physically simulated ripple effects. The water surface triggers and scripts detect when players or objects interact with the water—generating ripples that spread outward. An environmental pulse generator is also included, producing small random ripple clusters (via Poisson distribution) even without direct interaction, giving the surface a sense of life. Developers can configure pulse frequency, intensity, and range, allowing the water to appear calm and reflective or lively and sparkling. Control & UI: Players can switch water modes in-game via the provided UI panel. The UI includes buttons such as “Default,” “Enhanced,” and “Galaxy,” each linked to Udon scripts for instant effect changes. Developers can enable or disable modules (e.g., ambient wave sources, player-driven ripples) and adjust parameters for custom control. Options include player footsteps generating ripples (scaled by movement speed) or objects producing splashes upon impact, enhancing immersion. Preset Modes & Materials: DLSS includes multiple visual presets, such as Default (classic luminous blue), Multicolor Enhanced (vivid neon-style water), and Galaxy (fantastical starry-sky effect). Each preset uses its own L3 shader/material configuration. Developers can load these presets or create custom modes. Presets adjust not only color schemes but also brightness and glow parameters to fit different world atmospheres. Color & Parameter Customization: A comprehensive gradient customization system is provided. With the ColorHub tool, creators can generate new color-band textures to alter base and glow colors. The L2 and L3 layers support independent color channels, enabling single-color or multicolor glowing effects. The system also exposes numerous parameters—including wave speed, decay, ripple size, halo intensity, and pulse frequency—allowing creators to finely adjust both physical and visual aspects of the water surface to match their world’s needs.
